Government Can Help Kidney Patients

Government Can Help Kidney Patients

There are lakhs of kidney patients around the world who have undergone renal failure and waiting for kidney transplantation. Without transplantation their lives will be cut short. Without kidney transplatation they have to undergo dialysis regularly which is prohibitively expensive. Only those who can afford these can live others die. Policy Makers must realise the miseries of kidney patients and try to increase organ availability by various means.

Measures that must be adopted urgently include:

  1. Promote cadaver transplants through media propaganda, laws, incentives, encouraging religious, social and other groups to promote cadaver transpants.
  2. Encourage multi way kidney tranplants in hospitals whereby mismatched donors and patients come together to share donor kidneys
  3. Lift restrictions for legitimate organ donation
  4. Prevent kidney thefts and rackets with rational laws targeted at trafficking rather than killing the entire process of organ donation per se.
  5. Simply the legal procedures and make available clearances for kidney transplants quickly without causing distress to patients relatives.
  6. Government should set up a special task force or system in order to ensure smooth and increased organ availability for transplant patients.
  7. Helping the patients awaiting transplants should be given high priority in Health sector

Mr. Vijayaraghavan’s noble gift

Hi  friends,
Doing Service to suffering people and self sacrifice for others make a person great. In this context I gratefully remember Sri. Vijayaraghavan.

It happened in October 05, 2007. Mr. Vijayaraghavan, who is said to be some NSS Karayogam President and a communist hailing from an aristocratic nair family in Thiruvalla side was brought brain dead at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi. His noble family members accepted the idea of donating his organs. His relative Dr. Ramachandran is said to have taken initiative for this great act of kindness.

My wife Smitha who had undergone chronic renal failure and suffering great hardships and facing death became a beneficiary of the organ donation. Cadaver transplant was performed at AIMS with many eminent doctors working whole night in operation tables.

Mr. Vijayaraghavan is no more. But he saved many lives when he bid adieu  to this world. He lives in our hearts as an angel sent by the GOD.

One of his kidney was donated to a beneficiary at Lakeshore Hospital, Kochi. His liver was donated to a muslim beneficiary from Malabar. His eyes still live in some beneficiary patients in Little Flower Hospital  Angamaly

It was 35th birthday of Smitha when the transplant was done.

In our State cadaver transplant has not become common. The christian church and the muslim organisations who stress on love and service must come forward to promote organ donation. In many developed countries cadaver transplant is promoted through various Government initiatives.

There is great organ shortage in all countries. Failure of heart, kidney, liver and other organs is common and lakhs of patients suffer indescribably when organs fail. Any of us could be a patient with organ failure any time. Society has to rise up to come to their support.

Mr. Vijayaraghavan’s family members are very literate and socially responsible citizens who understand the value of organ donation and therefore conceded to requests. Organs, which will turn into decayed matter within no time after death of an individual, are precious things that could live and also give life to suffering individuals. It is the duty of every responsible family to donate organs of dead relatives. Its spiritual value is endless. The prayers of the beneficiaries would without doubt help the departed soul to reach the heavenly abode of the God.

His photo always will reside in my purse, as a holy material.

Kerala Kidney Site is for helping Kidney Patients

This site is a patient side initiative to provide information for Kerala kidney patients and help them to the maximum extent possible

Kidney diseases shatter the life of patients and their families. The patient faces a slow painful life with very expensive life supporting medical systems and becomes dependent on others. The families of patients face bankruptcy due to enormous medical expenses, loss of job of the patient and loss of earning potential of spouse or supporting family member.

Many families in Kerala face terrible situation of a member falling ill as kidney patient. Many families and patients even commit suicide.

Medical insurance in our Kerala has not been given much importance so far. Many organisations have not yet started providing medical insurance cover for their employees. We must explore various supporting systems to help patients in need.

I want every visitor of this blog to contribute their mite by way of useful information or inspiring statements or any other means so that we can join hands to help these miserable human beings afflicted with kidney diseases.

Let us also try to awaken the public authorities and private enterprises and individuals to come to support them

I will try my best to increase the contents of this page so as to make it useful to the patients
